Chapter 10

Ruby

“And what about that guy last night? Nathan, right?” Sophia asked, as she got dressed. Ruby sighed, already tired of this conversation. It wasn’t the first time that Sophia had nagged her about her lack of a love life, but she thought that maybe coming here might give her a break from it.

Ruby dressed quickly, braiding her hair and pinning it up into a bun. It was a mistake to drink last night, and now, she had a faint headache at her temples that wouldn’t go away.

She sighed and looked herself over in the mirror. She had covered up her faint dark circles with some makeup, and she didn’t look any different from yesterday. All she would have to do is take more detailed notes than usual, and she should be fine at the convention.

“Sophia, you’re insane. I’m not going to start dating a guy that I just met yesterday. Especially during a medical convention,” she said, turning away from the mirror. It looked like Sophia had given up on the task of dressing herself, and she was laying on her bed, shirtless now, giving Ruby an infuriating look.

Ruby tried to ignore her, as she buttoned her shirt and put on her pants. Maybe if she just ignored her for long enough, she would just drop it.

“Well, he’s not a complete idiot. And you seemed like you were having fun last night.” Sophia’s voice was all too obvious, to even be hinting at something. Ruby huffed, snatching up the white lab coat off of the bed and putting it on.

“I was drunk,” she snapped.

“You were tipsy,” Sophia snapped, right back.

Finally, Ruby was ready to go. She turned on her heel, walking to the door, when Sophia bolted over to her side, catching her wrist, as she reached out for the doorknob. Ruby jumped, turning to look at her half-dressed friend.

“I’m just saying it’s the most I’ve ever seen you connect with someone.” Sophia said slowly. Ruby looked back and forth, between her friend’s face and the hand on her wrist. She wasn’t expecting this.

Sophia was her friend. Her best friend, in fact. They burned through medical school together, and they had come out of it as lifelong friends.

Sophia didn’t act like this. Sophia teased sometimes, but she knew when to drop something, when it wasn’t funny anymore. This wasn’t amusing; she was being serious about her and Nathan, and Ruby groaned internally.

Drinking last night was definitely a mistake.

“That doesn’t mean anything. I have you!” Ruby said, snatching her wrist away from Sophia. She was starting to get a little irritated with her friend. She didn’t have the capacity to deal with this right now. Not Sophia’s speculation about this random guy she met, her lingering hangover, and the meeting that she had to get to.

“I’m your friend. This is different. You guys kinda seemed a little . . . I don’t know, nice together?” Sophia said. The worst part was that she was being genuine.

Ruby had made her way through medical school in just three years.
